When You Need Theft Bail Bonds

Theft charges in Texas come in a lot of different shapes. Maybe it’s shoplifting at a store off Loop 1604. Maybe it’s an accusation from an old employer, or a bad check, or skipping out on a hotel bill. All of it lands at the Bexar County Adult Detention Center on Comal Street.

How serious the charge is depends mostly on the dollar value of what was allegedly taken. Class C and Class B misdemeanors cover the lower end. Class A misdemeanor theft kicks in once the value hits $750. Past $2,500, you’re looking at a state jail felony, and it goes up from there to first-degree felony if the property is worth more than $300,000.

Some situations push the charge up automatically, even if the dollar amount stays low. A prior theft conviction does it. So does theft from someone 65 or older, theft from a nonprofit, or organized retail theft. Catalytic converter theft is a state jail felony in Texas at the bare minimum.

What Happens After You Call Us

Call us. We’ll need a name and date of birth, and from there we look up the booking and figure out what bond the magistrate set.

Once we’ve got the numbers, we tell you the cost up front. We go over what we need from you as the co-signer and any conditions the court attached to the bond. Paperwork can happen in person at our office, or by fax or email if you can’t get downtown.

Then we post the bond at the Bexar County Jail. The jail handles release on its own clock, which can take hours, and we’ll keep you posted while you wait.

Theft Bail Bonds Cost in San Antonio TX

Bail bond fees in Texas are 10% of the total bond amount. So a $5,000 bond costs $500. A $20,000 bond costs $2,000. That fee is non-refundable, and 10% is the standard rate across San Antonio.

The bond amount itself depends entirely on the charge. Class B misdemeanor theft bonds in Bexar County usually run $1,500 to $3,000. Class A typically falls between $2,500 and $5,000. State jail felony theft, which covers property worth $2,500 to $30,000, generally lands somewhere in the $5,000 to $10,000 range, and higher felony theft can run $20,000, $30,000, or more.

A few things push bonds higher. Prior convictions are the big one. Whether the alleged victim was elderly or a nonprofit, whether weapons were involved, the value of the property, all of it factors in. We give you the price up front so you know what you’re working with.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Is the 10% bail bond fee refundable?

No. The 10% is what we charge for posting the full bond on your behalf, and it stays non-refundable in Texas regardless of how the case ends.

2. Do I need a co-signer for a theft bail bond?

Most of the time, yes. A co-signer takes on the financial responsibility if the defendant misses court, and we go over exactly what that means before you sign anything.
